This week goes down as the week when HOA Leaders’ lives changed a bit due to the signature of the new “HOA Bill of Rights” that the Governor signed into law.  It goes into effect on January 1 and of course, we’re continuing to unpack the whole thing and bring education to our members at chapter meetings and an upcoming webinar on May 28.

In the meantime we scrub the net for new summaries of the law. The latest one comes from Greenstein Sellers. We know Matt Greenstein and he published a great blog that includes a summary of the law that was written before the final signature.

An opening paragraph:

The bill’s supporters have described this as a “bill of rights” for homeowners in associations. Stories of perceived overreach by homeowners’ associations, and a desire by legislators to expand protections for homeowners, led to the bill’s passage. Industry groups raised concerns with the impact of how some of the proposed legislation would affect communities’ ability to self-govern, and due to significant feedback from stakeholders, the version that passed out of the House is less impactful than earlier versions were. Associations will nevertheless have to adjust to the new rules, and quickly.
