I actually graduated (a hundred years ago) with a degree in journalism.  Things were different then. The industry actually had a decent reputation and journalists were largely seen as objective and fair, at least as compared to today’s loose standards. I ended up dodging a bullet and didn’t become a journalist, even though I believe I could have been a fair one. I have used a lot of my training that I gained in my schooling in the career that I built.

In reading the scant headlines on the HOA “Bill of Rights” signed into law by our governor, I’m always giggling, at least a little, when something inaccurate or extreme is written about HOAs.  But what I am reading in the US Sun (which I hate to even quote, frankly) generated a downright guffaw.

Their opening paragraph:

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will decide whether SF 1750 will bring homeowners much needed protections from overreaching HOAs.

Well, great start. Their story is stamped as being published today and the good governor signed this thing on May 12. Maybe today’s reporters have no idea how to Google?

And then there’s this:

Boards across the state have sparked neighborhood chaos by randomly ordering bizarre improvements – & expecting homeowners to foot the bill.

Bizarre improvements? Neighbor chaos? All coming from “boards across the state.” My my, we’re a careless bunch, apparently.

They end with a wonderful quote from one of the bill’s authors:

“The reforms in this bill will rein in abusive HOAs by empowering residents with more information, more rights, and more protections,” said State Senator Eric Lucero, a Republican.

Rein in a few abusive ones while slapping the cuffs on the lion’s share of well run HOAs. That’s the world we’re in.
